Bermuda’s beer drinkers might find their Amstel Light missing or a scarce commodity in the near future as a tractor-trailer carrying $18,000 worth of the popular beer overturned last week on a US highway.

“It was going to be shipped to Bermuda,” William Parker of William Parker Associates Inc., the Philadelphia company that employed the truck driver, told a US newspaper.

The accident happened around 2 p.m. on Monday along Route 322 and the driver, whose name was not released, apparently got a piece of debris in his eye and drove off the road. The driver was taking the non-refrigerated cargo to Salem Port, where it was going to be shipped to Bermuda.

Mr. Parker said Bermuda “must” have its beer and unless it’s shipped, there is no other place to get it. Workers salvaged what they could from the overturned truck, placed it six cases high on pallets and loaded it on three other tractor-trailers.

This portion of the shipment is scheduled to make its way to Bermuda this week.
