Girl, 2, Falls Into Fire; Adults Too Drunk to Get Aid

A 2-year-old girl suffered serious burns Friday after falling into campfire, but didn't get medical attention for 12 hours because supervising adults were too intoxicated.

The girl was in protective custody Sunday with the state Department of Human Services.

Klamath County Sheriff Tim Evinger said the girl was camping at Miller Lake with her mother, Crystal Anderson, 21, and Anderson's boyfriend, Steven Eslinger, 29, both of Klamath Falls, when she reached into the fire to get hot dogs from a grill.

Evinger said Anderson tried to pull the girl away from the fire, but she lost her balance, fell onto the hot grill and was burned.

The accident happened at about 9 p.m., Friday. Medical personnel at Merle West Medical Center reported the incident to 911 dispatchers at 10:04 a.m. Saturday.

Evinger confirmed the girl was taken hospital the following morning.

The child was treated for first- and second-degree burns to her arm and then taken into state custody.

No one has been arrested in connection with the incident, but Evinger said the Klamath County Sheriff's Office is investigating because both adults were too intoxicated to drive to the hospital and an ambulance wasn't called.

"She needed immediate medical attention, and that's why law enforcement is interested," he said.

Possible charges could include a first-degree criminal mistreatment, a class C felony.
